The feast for
this event will be a Mongolian feast. I was looking for something different for
my first feast. I had trouble finding period recipes for Mongolia but since the
Mongolians acquired foods from areas they invaded I was able to verify recipes
could have been used by Mongolians (Hyer 1979). These recipes are
from a modern source.
The idea for
this feast was a conversation with someone who has a Mongolian persona, and we
looked at possible foods. I then started looking for options. The
Mongolians, being a nomadic culture did not write down their recipes, but they
have been passed down through the ages.
The soup for
today is gyatuk, a noodle soup from Tibet.
The chicken
dish comes from a Ukrainian recipe.
The lamb is
based upon a Chinese recipe. Chinese do not eat lamb, but the Mongolians
do, so they changed the meat to fit their diet. The potato curry served with
this dish is a modern recipe (Potatoes not being in the time of Genghis Khan)
but it pairs so well with the Lamb
And since
this is A Baronial Birthday, we end with cake!
Imperial
Mongolian Cooking is the modern source for this feast and I used Mongolian’s
Culture And Society to verify the practice of appropriating foods from
conquered peoples. This feast includes foods from Tibet and China.
