Description:
Celebrating the 51st Annual Tournament of Ymir and Baronial Birthday for Windmasters' Hill.
In the Old Norse tradition, Tyr is not only a war deity but
also the God of Justice and Law. With his word honored among all the gods with
the sacrifice of his arm in taming the Norse guardian Fenrir, Tyr represents
sacrifice just as much as he does redemption in the eyes of the law. Ymir 51-Tyr’s Redemption allows us to look upon the sacrifices of our many chivalrous
combatants across Atlantia in becoming noble and lawful fighters in the eyes of
the crown.
For our learned and glorious A&S competitors we offer
the chance to show active displays of art and science that envision sacrifice, ensure
justice and honor, and celebrate war as well as show acts of kindness and
mercy. These can come in the form of a scarf used to shelter a young one from
the cold, the creation of food and drink utilized in war celebrations, or even the best
use of “scales of justice” in a period piece of art or craft.
As for our wonderful forms of combat we will showcase fencing
and heavy combat challenges that involve the best use of just one arm instead
of both in achieving goals established by our martials. Tournaments of Chivalry
will be among the most well attended by our combatants in order to prove their
worth. We are also playing host to the Titan Tournament which will also
celebrate Tyr as our patron diety.
With the assistance of Noble Grissel Dhai and their
assembled team of accomplished chefs who will be responsible for different
meals on Friday night, Saturday morning, and Saturday evening respectively-we
are sure to bring delights to the populace of Windmasters Hill and the rest of
Atlantia!

General Activities
Martial Activities:
As the cold
days of winter near their end, the annual Tournament of Ymir fast approaches.
This year in addition to bringing attention to the frost giant Ymir, we will be
saluting Tyr the One-handed, the Norse god of war. This means of course that
there are many various and sundry martial activities planned in the war god's
honor.
On the armored
combat field Count Rondolfr will be running a grand tourney to start off the
tournament season. Fighters will have ample chance to show off their skills.
This tourney is also part of the Titan Tournament and the victor will receive
entry into the Titan Tournament to be fought at the next War of the Wings. The
first phase of the tournament will be round robin pools. The number of pools
and how many fighters from each pool will advance will be based on the total
number of fighters, but the total will be sixteen fighters who will then
participate in a double elimination tournament. When the round robin rounds
end, a second bear pit tournament will start for those who don't make it into
the double elimination tournament. In honor of the Norse god Tyr, this will be
a single sword tournament.
On rapier field
Master Tassin will be a holding a splendid tournament for fencers to show off
their skill and prowess. This tourney is also part of the Titan Tournament and
the victor will receive entry into the Titan Tournament to be fought at the
next War of the Wings. The first phase of the tournament will be round robin
pools. The number of pools and how many fencers from each pool will advance
will be based on the total number of fencers, but the total will be sixteen
fencers who will then participate in a double elimination tournament. When the
round robin rounds end, a second bear pit tournament will start for those who
don't make it into the double elimination tournament. In honor of the Norse god
Tyr, this will be a single sword tournament. In addition this bear pit
tournament is sponsored by Count Eckehard Thurn, the First Sword of Atlantia.
Archers sharpen
your arrowheads and smooth your fletchings. At the archery range Lady Jenny is
planning both a Novelty Shoot tournament and a Clout shoot. Their will be a
winner for each archery rank.
On the thrown
weapons range Lord Eoghan will have multiple targets set up for any and all to
come test their throwing skills with a number of different weapons.
Lady Thora will
be available to run Youth Combat activities for any youth fighters in
attendance. Whether that is a tournament or a practice will be determined by
how many youth combatants that we have in attendance.
If you have any
questions about any of the martial activities please feel free to contact me
at dukeragnarr@gmail.com

230pm-3pm Competition close/Judging
**An artist solar sponsored by Mistress Adair will take place at her tent near the fighting fields.
**Mistress Annora Hall will be sponsoring a special competition in the A&S hall as well:
The cult that once worshipped Tyr is reflected primarily in place names, especially in Denmark. Tislund, Tisso, and Tyrseng are Danish locations that remember Tyr. The waters of Tisso, which means "Tyr’s lake," have yielded up to archaeologists a wealth of Viking weapons—spear tips, axes, and swords—that were thrown into the lake as offerings to Tyr. In the spirit of Lake Tisso, competitors are asked to bring their best Scandinavian inspired stews. Please document time period, ingredients, and how your inspiration is represented in your stew.
Many thanks for providing this opportunity,
Hlaefdige (Mistress) Annora Hall
**Magister Gaelan mac Cuinnegainc will also be sponsoring a cooking competition at the A&S hall focusing on mincemeat pies or tarts.
In the depths of winter, as our food stores dwindle, we seek comfort in warm pies and the remaining fruits of our harvests. Many of the various cultures that we try to bring to life have at one point or another developed their own form and recipes for a mincemeat (mixed fruit) pie or tart.
My wish is to inspire participants to research and document their quest to make a mincemeat pie or tart. There is no culture or time-period limitation on your prepared dish other than the original source should be pre-1615. I was inspired by a Tart of Apples within Curye on Inglysch (~1390, English) to sponsor this competition.
A Tart of Apples
Recipe from Constance B. Hieatt & Sharon Butler, Curye on Inglysch, Oxford University Press, 1985.
Part II Diuersa Servisa, Recipe 82 from Curye on Inglysch
Original text:
For to make tartys in applis, tak gode applys & gode spycis & figys & reysons & perys, & wan tey arn wel ybrayd colour wyt safroun wel & do yt in a cofyn, & do yt forth to bake wel.
Translation:
For to make tarts in apples, take good apples and good spices and figs, and raisons, and pears and when they are well ground/pounded, color them with saffron well and put them in a crust and bake well.
Definitions (taken from Susan J. Evans, A Gode Cooke’s Glossarie, Falconwood Press, 1984):
Ybrayd = pounded (in a mortar)
Cofyn = crust of a pie, case or container
Participants will bring their completed dish and any documentation to the Arts and Science location on Saturday at the listed time. A list of ingredients is required so that we don’t have any allergy issues. All participants will then taste and discuss the dishes which were created, their redactions (documentation highly encouraged), your process for research, substitutions/choices that were made, and dish presentation. The participants and royalty will then vote for the winner. The public is encouraged to participate in the discussion but not invited to vote.
No kitchen or baking facilities will be available at the site to prepare your dish the day of the competition. Please prepare your dish ahead of time.
**Patronne Murienne will also be sponsoring an A&S competition called "Tyr's Gambit."

The Feast of the Norns:
What has been. What is. What shall be. Urdr, Verdandi, and Skuld invite you to their Hall beneath the boughs of Yggdrasil for meals which celebrate the past, the present, and the future of SCA cooking.
Among the mythical figures of the Norse Pantheon, none are so entwined with humanity as the trio of the Norns. Mysterious figures present at the birth of all humans, the Norns (similar to the Fates of Greek mythology) were spinners & weavers who determined the fate of each individual from the moment they first drew breath. For Ymir 51, the Norns are coming together to weave together a set of sumptuous repasts for the populace of Atlantia!
The role of Urdr (What Has Been) is being embodied by Lady Margot LeClerc. The role of Verdandi (What Is) is being embodied by Lady Rose Green. The role of Skuld (What Shall Be) is being embodied by Noble Grissel Dhai.
